Toubkal Trekking Permits & Police Regulations 2026

Official High Atlas Mountain Regulations (Updated 2026)

Since 2018 and strictly reinforced throughout 2024–2026, the Royal Gendarmerie and the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior enforce strict safety regulations for ascending Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) and traversing the Toubkal National Park.

1. Police & Gendarmerie Checkpoints

There are two primary checkpoints on the standard trail from Imlil to Toubkal Refuge:

• Aroumd Checkpoint: Located just past the village of Aroumd. Guides must present their official professional badge (issued by the Royal Moroccan Federation of Ski and Mountaineering - FRMSM) along with their client passenger manifest.
• Sidi Chamarouch Checkpoint: Situated at the holy shrine village (2,310 m). Trekker passports are logged and checked against the guide registration.

2. Required Documents for Trekkers

• Valid national passport (minimum 3 months validity).
• Photocopy of the passport photo page (provided to your guide in Imlil).
• Proof of travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation up to 4,500 meters.

3. Winter & Shoulder Season Alpine Gear (November to May)

Between late November and early May, crampons and ice axes are legally required at the Refuge checkpoints before departing for the summit cone. Guides will inspect your crampons for boots compatibility before leaving Imlil basecamp.

4. How to Verify Your Guide's Credentials

Always verify that your guide carries a plastic photo identification card issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism with the title "Guide des Espaces Naturels" (Mountain Guide). Every guide on AtlasMountainRange.com holds an active, verified badge number (e.g. Certified Mountain Guide).
