Expert gear checklist for summer day hikes, 2-day Toubkal summits, and winter high-altitude conditions.
High Atlas Mountains Packing Checklist (All Seasons)
Packing for the Atlas Mountains requires preparing for rapid weather swings: midday sun in the valleys can exceed 28°C (82°F), while summit temperatures on Toubkal can drop well below freezing with intense windchill.
Essential Footwear
- Broken-in Hiking Boots: Sturdy mid-to-high cut boots with ankle support and Vibram soles for scree and rocky trails.
- Refuge Camp Slippers / Sandals: Light sandals or flip-flops to wear inside gîtes and refuges after trekking.
- Merino Wool Socks: 3-4 pairs of moisture-wicking wool hiking socks to prevent blisters.
Layering System
- Moisture-wicking Base Layer: 2 synthetic or merino wool t-shirts. Avoid pure cotton.
- Mid-Layer Warmth: A warm fleece jacket or grid-fleece pullover.
- Insulated Puffer Jacket: Down or high-loft synthetic jacket (essential for mornings and evenings above 3,000 m).
- Waterproof/Windproof Shell: GORE-TEX or equivalent breathable rain jacket with hood.
- Trekking Pants: Lightweight, quick-drying hiking trousers. Zip-off convertible pants work well.
Trek Gear & Hardware
- Backpack (Day Pack): 25-35L daypack for carrying water, layers, and camera while mules carry main duffels.
- Trekking Poles: Telescopic poles with carbide tips (indispensable for the steep scree descent from Toubkal).
- UV 400 Sunglasses & Sun Hat: High altitude sun is fierce; glacier glasses recommended in snow season.
- Headlamp with Spare Batteries: Mandatory for the 4:00 AM alpine start toward Toubkal summit.
- Hydration System: 2–3 liters total capacity (Water bladders or insulated Nalgene bottles) plus water purification tablets.
Refuge & Personal Hygiene
- Sleeping bag liner or 3-season sleeping bag (Refuges provide heavy wool blankets, but personal sleeping bags ensure hygiene and warmth).
- Quick-dry microfibre towel & biodegradable soap.
- High SPF sunblock (50+) and protective lip balm.
- Personal medical kit: blister plasters (Compeed), rehydration salts, ibuprofen, and altitude medication (Diamox) if prescribed.
