Rising to 4,167 meters (13,671 feet) above sea level, Jebel Toubkal is North Africa’s highest peak. Located just 65 kilometers south of the frenetic medina of Marrakech, it attracts thousands of trekkers every year. But climbing Toubkal requires thoughtful preparation, respect for high altitude, and full awareness of local Moroccan safety regulations.

Is a Guide Legally Mandatory for Toubkal?

Yes. Following security updates enacted by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Tourism, all hikers proceeding beyond the military checkpoint at Armed village toward the Toubkal National Park refuges must be accompanied by an accredited, government-licensed mountain guide. You will be required to present your passport and guide credentials at checkpoints in Imlil, Armed, and Sidi Chamarouch.

The Classic 2-Day Route Breakdown

Day 1: Imlil (1,740m) to Refuge Les Mouflons (3,207m)

You begin in Imlil valley, walking along ancient stone paths lined with walnut trees. The trail crosses the Mizane river at Armed village (1,900m) and ascends through scree and arid slopes to Sidi Chamarouch (2,310m)—a picturesque white shrine where you can stop for fresh orange juice. From Sidi Chamarouch, the trail climbs steadily along the right bank of the gorge to reach the two stone refuges at 3,207m after approximately 4.5 to 6 hours of hiking.

Day 2: Base Refuge (3,207m) to Toubkal Summit (4,167m) & Return

Trekkers typically start before dawn (around 04:30 AM) with headlamps. The initial climb up the South Col scree slope is steep and gravelly. After traversing the upper ridge, you reach the summit plateau with its iconic metal pyramid marker. The descent retraces the route back to the refuge for lunch, followed by the walk down to Imlil, arriving late afternoon.

Foire Aux Questions

Yes, Mount Toubkal can be climbed year-round. However, from late November to late April, the upper mountain is covered in snow and ice, making crampons, ice axes, and winter mountain guide experience strictly necessary.

You should possess good cardiovascular endurance. You will be hiking 5 to 6 hours on Day 1 (gaining 1,467m) and 8 to 9 hours on Day 2 (gaining 960m to summit, then descending 2,427m).

At 4,167m, mild symptoms of acute mountain sickness (headache, shortness of breath, mild nausea) are common. Stay well hydrated (drink 3-4 liters daily), maintain a steady rhythm, and avoid alcohol.
