The High Atlas mountains experience dramatic seasonal contrasts. While Marrakech swelters at 42°C in July, alpine peaks remain delightfully cool. Conversely, in January, the higher crests are transformed into a snowy alpine wonderland.
Spring (April to June) - The Prime Trekking Season
Spring is arguably the most beautiful time in the Atlas. Snowmelt fills the mountain streams, walnut and apple orchards burst into bloom, and daytime temperatures hover between 18°C and 24°C in the valleys. Toubkal summit snow usually recedes by late May, allowing standard trekking boots.
Summer (July to August) - High Alpine Treks & River Escapes
While the low foothills like Ourika become bustling weekend escapes for city residents seeking cool river air, high-altitude trekkers enjoy long daylight hours and dry trails on Toubkal and the surrounding 4,000m summits. Start your daily hikes early to avoid afternoon thermal haze.
Autumn (September to November) - Crisp Air & Golden Valleys
Autumn is the favorite season of local mountain guides. The air is crystal clear, temperatures are ideal for endurance hiking, and the walnut harvest fills the villages with festive activity. October offers ideal conditions for the Mount Toubkal 2-day trek.
Winter (December to March) - Mountaineering & Snowcapped Splendor
The high passes are blanketed in snow. In Imlil and Ouirgane, riad wood fires crackle at night. For experienced hikers, winter on Toubkal is a world-class, accessible introduction to crampons and ice axes.
